Thai name : Plaa Lai Phueak
Tree, 4-6 m high, very bitter, less-branched. Leaves odd-pinnate, alternate, crowded at the top; leaflets 17-27, ovate-elliptic, 2-3 cm wide, 5-7 cm long, dark green; shoots and young leaves with brownish hairs. Inflorescence in axillary raceme; flowers small, reddish purple. Fruit oblong drupe.
Root: antipyretic, antimalarial, contains bitter active principles eurycomalactone, eurycomanol and eurycomanone; inhibits growth of Plasmodium falciparum in vitro. Potential antimalarial; needs further research.
